WE THOUGHT YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW . . .

  • People who shop at farmers markets have 15–20 social interactions per visit, compared with 1–2 per grocery store visit.
  • Locally owned, independent businesses (including farmers market vendors) return more than 3 times as much of the value of their sales to local economies as do their chain-store competitors.
  • Growers selling locally create 13 full-time jobs per $1 million in revenue earned; those not selling locally, by comparison, create only 3.
  • Proximity to farmers markets is associated with lower body mass index.
  • Each minute, the U.S. loses an acre of farmland to development.

ABFM ALLIES
To our long list of people who help the ABFM happen, we want to add the Town of Acton, including:

• Town Manager Steve Ledoux
• Board of Selectmen, Janet Adachi, chair
• Health Department
• Police Department
• Fire Department
• Highway Department
• Municipal Properties Department

The Town supports the ABFM through: our annual contract, which permits us to use Pearl Street; consultation with the BoS, Town Manager, and Police, Fire, and Highway departments on logistical and policy issues; cooperation on Health Department certification and inspections; the generous provision of storage space for ABFM gear; provision of street barriers for market day; and the ongoing support of the West Acton Citizens' Library. Thank you all!
