WE THOUGHT YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW . . .
- People who shop at farmers markets have 15–20 social interactions per visit, compared with 1–2 per grocery store visit.
- Locally owned, independent businesses (including farmers market vendors) return more than 3 times as much of the value of their sales to local economies as do their chain-store competitors.
- Growers selling locally create 13 full-time jobs per $1 million in revenue earned; those not selling locally, by comparison, create only 3.
- Proximity to farmers markets is associated with lower body mass index.
- Each minute, the U.S. loses an acre of farmland to development.
