As the next ABFM season approaches — our 10th! — we have important information to share with you.

ABFM: promoting good food, supporting sustainable agriculture, and building community since 2009

This coming season will be the ABFM’s 10th! It was launched by a bunch of regular folks in 2009, and has been a wonderful community asset for these past nine years. Our tagline captures the essence of what the ABFM has provided: Real Food from Real People — promoting good food, supporting sustainable agriculture, and building community since 2009.

As we approach this 10th season, we recognize that the ABFM needs new blood, new perspectives, and a serious conversation about its future.

We invite you to a Community Stakeholder Meeting about the future of the ABFM; please mark your calendars for Sunday, April 29, 3–5pm in the RJ Grey Junior High Library in Acton. We hope mightily that you’ll come.

[Please note that parking may be a challenge because of the Chinese Language School, which is in session Sunday afternoons; remember that the Kmart lot is available just across the street from the Junior High.]

So why this stakeholder meeting? Simple question and a complex answer, which boils down to this: the ABFM has been able to succeed because of work and support from many corners: the Town of Acton; the market’s Partners and Sponsors; our abutters; our market day and other volunteers; our vendors, performers, and community groups; and the work of the Leadership Board (LB) and coordinators.

The core organizers of the market (the LB) have changed over the years to some extent — people have moved on to other pursuits, and a few new folks have joined us, for shorter or longer tenures. But the reality is that for several years, the myriad tasks of organizing and operating and promoting and staffing the market have fallen to a very small group of people. The continued success of the ABFM will depend, going forward, on the recruitment and active engagement of new volunteers, and board members — who are critical to the work of guiding and representing the market.

Thus, this stakeholders meeting: to discuss, as community members, the feasibility of continuing the ABFM beyond this coming 10th season, and if so, how best to do that.
